Providenciales

Bays, inlets and beaches with names like Little Water Cay, Taylor Bay, Chalk Sound and Grace Bay speckle the coast of Providenciales and attest to the dreamy Caribbean spirit of this little 98 km2 island paradise.
Providenciales or “Provo” as it’s known to locals is the second most westerly island on the 37-mile chain of islands, Turks and Caicos, which lie directly north of Haiti and the Dominican Republic and 500 miles south east of the Florida Coast. With just over 32,000 inhabitants, Providenciales is the most populated island of the chain and certainly the most tourist-orientated, offering both pristine, white sands and a host of activities, flavorsome food and exciting wildlife.

Grace Bay

Much of Providenciales’ coastline is protected by nature reserves and marine parks. The largest of these is the Princess Alexandra Land and Sea Natural Park, which protects the pristine Grace Bay on the island’s northeastern edge. This 12 mile stretch of golden sand, which plays host to the majority of the island’s hotels and resorts, was awarded the best beach in the Caribbean by Trip Advisor in 2013 and it’s easy to understand why.
The beach gently slopes into the glistening turquoise sea and is the perfect setting for snorkeling, kayaking, sailing and paddle boarding. The sea is alive with colorful fish and at night bioluminescent glow worms light up the water.

Diving

Diving is another popular watersport on the island. The barrier reef which surrounds the Turks and Caicos Islands offer beautiful scuba experiences and serve to create calm swimming conditions, breaking incoming surf. Smith’s Reef and Bight Reef are two good diving areas. Past the reef deep offshore waters serve as a transit route for humpback whales, manta rays and giant sea turtles.
From late December through spring, over 2,500 humpback whales pass through on their annual southwardly migration. For more wildlife, you can pop into the Caicos Conch Farm to learn more about the island’s national symbol or visit Little Water Cay for some iguana-spotting or even have a ride on the islands ponies.

Da Conch Shack
Da Conch Shack

Da Conch Shack

No trip to Providenciales is complete without a stop off in Da Conch Shack and Rum Bar, a veritable Turks and Caicos institution. The likes of the Huffington Post, the NY Times and the BBC have recognized the gastronomic gloriousness of this place, which serves up fresh Conch Salad, a ceviche-style concoction of raw conch, onions and green peppers to locals and tourists. The menu also includes grouper, snapper and seasonal lobster all caught by local fishermen. Da Conch Shack can be reached by car by driving 15 minutes from Grace Bay along the northwestern coastline to the Blue Hills.

Chalk Sound lagoon

Moving south from Grace Bay, past the airport and along the South Dock road, a great expanse of vibrant turquoise expands on the horizon. Chalk Sound is a capacious natural lagoon dotted with hundreds of small rocky islands. Because of its status as a natural park, the lagoon is free from powered watercraft and as a result the water is crystal clear and free from algae. The lagoon is populated with bonefish, barracudas, stingrays and small lemon shark and the craggy islands are home to unique rock iguanas that are not found elsewhere on the island. Though there are no designated lookout points, a stop in Las Brisas, a Caribbean-Mediterranean fusion restaurant offers beautiful views of the otherworldly lagoon.

Sapodilla Bay and Taylor Bay

Two neighboring bays, which are more secluded than other beaches on Providenciales, straddle the land between the Atlantic and Chalk South. Sapodilla Bay, the larger of the two, has a yacht anchorage and is an excellent place to bring small children. Taylor Bay, which lies about one mile past Sapodilla Bay, is a perfect crescent of white sand with some of the calmest waters on the island. It is possible to wade out into the blue for over 100 yards without going underwater. Both beaches should provide ample scope for paddle boarding enthusiasts.

Off road driving

If you feel like a day away from the beach, Providenciales offers some excellent off road driving. Frenchman’s Creek and Pigeon Pond Nature Reserve is the largest section of protected land on Providenciales and is home to mangrove wetlands, dramatic sea cliffs and inland saline ponds. In the Northwest Point National Park, you can find rocky coastlines and small coves, referred to locally as the iron shore. Finally West Harbor Bluff, which is directly south from Frenchman’s Creek Nature Reserve, is home to a small cave featuring 200 year old rock carvings and a secluded beach.
